WIA2020 Shortlist Highlights: Design, Product & Packaging Category
Illustration has great potential for use on all sorts of designed products and packaging, for everything including food and drink, stamps, record covers and much more.
A great illustration in this category will make the product stand out from the crowd, giving it personality and colour. Illustration can often add a contemporary or luxurious feel, and will keep consumers returning to brands again and again.

Alan Dunne : Christmas Stamps 2019 – An Post
Alan’s set of six illustrations were commissioned by An Post, the Irish postal service, for a set of Christmas stamps. They are made using cut paper, which were collaged in layers, to create scenes reminiscent of a theatre set. The colours and shapes were carefully lit and photographed to create a graphic quality that works brilliantly for the small scale of the stamps.
Alan Dunne is an illustrator and author based in Ireland. He is passionate about vernacular design and uncovering stories through cultural historical archives. He teaches illustration at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin.

Alé Mercado : West Cork Podcast – Live Event
Alé was commissioned by Jennifer Forde and Sam Bungey to create some backdrops for the live show of their West Cork podcast. The illustrations were projected at the event, to create atmosphere and set the tone. The works show the rural landscape, created by layering multiple monoprints that were then collaged and composed digitally in Photoshop.
Born in Granada, Spain, and now living in rural Ireland, Alé has worked as a full-time illustrator since December 2003.

Chul Min.Lee : The Dance of Life
Yi Chul-min’s illustration was commissioned by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture for a poster to promote the Seoul Dance Festival. The numerous figures combine to make a complex pattern for the viewer to explore the story of dance. The work is made with paint, and finished digitally.
Yi Chul-min is a Korean illustrator and illustration planner based in Seoul.

Eugenia Mello : The Gift of Giving
Eugenia’s colourful illustration was commissioned by Big Box. Showing the act of gift giving, the characters and leaves interlink in a harmonious pattern with the colours giving an almost tropical feel. The illustration was used on gift bags, and as wall art for the company’s head office.
Eugenia Mello is an illustrator and graphic designer from Buenos Aires, Argentina currently living and drawing in New York City, USA.

Kezia Gabriella : Double Negative Artisanal Brewery
Kezia created this suite of four illustrations as a self-initiated project as a challenge to herself to create a brand story around the concept of double negative. The characters in the labels are bright, with interesting use of outline and pattern to create texture and depth. The illustrations are inspired by different flavour profiles found in craft beer.
Kezia is an art director and illustrator currently based in Singapore, specialising in marketing, branding and craft.

Lucia Vinti : Van Gogh and Britain For Families
Lucia was commissioned by Tate Britain to create a concertina book for its learning department, to be given out free to families at the exhibition entrance. The illustrations are made by hand, using coloured pencil and brush pen, and then the layouts composed digitally. These charming illustrations offer children an accessible way to engage with the art on display.
Lucia is an illustrator based in London, UK, graduating from the illustration course at the University of Brighton in 2019.

Owen Davey : Mythopedia
Owen was commissioned by Mythopedia to create illustrations that could be used on a website as banners and headers. The works are very graphic and modern, creating a unified aesthetic for the different cultures from Norse, to Aztec, to Egyptian. The contrasting tones and colours help to make the images bold and exciting.
Owen Davey is an award-winning illustrator from the UK. Over the last 11 years, he has worked with clients including Google, Facebook, Sony, Lego, National Geographic and WWF. Owen is represented by Folio Art.

Pia Sun : The Guide Map of Chinese Tranditional Museum
These illustrations for a guide map is full of life and dynamic shapes. It was commissioned for use as a guide map for the Hangzhou Art & Craft Museum, particularly for younger visitors to capture a sense of adventure and curiosity.
Pia Sun comes from China, and is currently studying animation at University Kassel in Germany.

Tania Yakunova : Be Green
Tania was commissioned by Green Network Energy to create a set of illustrations for gift calendar and postcards under theme of ‘be green’, promoting sustainable living and a mindful attitude to the environment. The characters are full of personality, and the illustrations have a joyful positivity in their colours and shapes.
Tania Yakunova is an illustrator who lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine. Clients include Coca-Cola, Visa Gold, Yves Rocher, Unit 9, Marvell App, Invision.

Yukai Du : Innovation of Science and Technology Stamps
Yukai Du was commissioned by Post Office China, to create a set of collectable stamps celebrating technological advancements. The illustrations combine the abstract concepts of each technology with recognisable figurative elements. On closer inspection, intricate patterns containing hidden details become apparent, emphasised by a bold colour palette and graphic sensibility.
Originally from China, Yukai Du is a London-based illustrator and animator.
