Interview:

Preferred Pronoun?
He/Him

Why did you choose to enter this work?
This illustration felt special to me throughout the process— from ideation to completion. It's the only piece I entered simply because it stands out in my mind as my personal best from last year.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I had only one chance to capture the moment once I lit my paper sculpture on fire. The stakes were thrilling and exhilarating, and I get a surge of that feeling when I look at it now.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
The effort to create community around the competition is unique to WIA.

Where do you usually work?
My fiancé and I moved into our 125 year old house about 3 years ago. With his own 2 hands he renovated the second floor of our barn into my art studio, tailored to my needs. I couldn't be luckier.

How long did it take to complete your project?
I had about a week from the time the work was commissioned to the time final art was due.

What is your dream commission?
I'd like to do an ad for home or lifestyle. I'd love to see my work and the reach of a campaign.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I find the joy of illustrating is in the variety of subjects I get to learn about and conceptualize. With my background as a set designer, I have a soft spot for environs, places, and homes, etc.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Find your own voice, so that when someone sees your work they know without a doubt that it's yours.

What are your plans for the future?
I'm getting married at the end of the summer! Work has been slow for the past year, seemingly related to the proliferation of AI "artwork" and stagnant and reduced budgets. I plan to keep at it!
