The World Illustration Awards 2021 Longlist features 500 projects by New Talent and Professional illustrators from all over the world across ten categories. Taiwan based I Chu Tsao created the project “Hello Masters” at National Taitung University for a buddhistic magazine which addresses the relationship between humans and the natural world during the pandemic. This was initially created as a line drawing and then coloured in digitally.
I Chu Tsao is currently studying for a major in Children’s Literature, focusing on making picture books and drawing illustrations.
A series of illustrations and gifs for the book Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Ruo-Hsin Wu took inspiration from the author’s depictions of the animals, plants, water and light in the coastal marshes depicting the interaction between the marsh girl and the natural world.
Ruo-Hsin Wu is a Taiwanese visual artist, Illustrator and animator. She holds a MA in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art in London.
This project, Looking for a pig in the city, was a class assignment that was eventually to be applied on a beer can for the open call of Collective Arts Brewing. It was created digitally as a personal portfolio piece in response to a song.
Yujia Zhang is currently an MFA Illustration candidate from Savannah College of Art and Design.
Portal of Happiness: This is an entry work for Byte Dance Logo Creative Extension Competition by China based Yunshu Li.
Aiming to show positive sides of multi-media platforms this illustration creates a scene where people of different generations can use their own imagination to create their own happiness and luck. The inspiration comes from the video game Portal.
The work by Pavlena Mateeva was intended as internal illustrations for “The Outsider” by Albert Camus. The purpose of it was to explore the publishing sector and the relationship between text and image, while creating a body of work that interprets a given text. To accomplish that the artist explored the relationship between the protagonist and the sun and water because of the way they affect and mirror his emotions.
Pavlena Mateeva is Bulgarian born illustrator based in Bournemouth, where she attends Arts University Bournemouth.
