Pavlena Mateeva
"The Outsider" by Albert Camus

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
These illustrations were part of a course project at Arts University Bournemouth. The purpose of it was to explore the publishing sector and the relationship between text and image, while creating a body of work that interprets a given text. The book I worked on was "The Outsider" by Albert Camus.

How was the illustration used:
The work was intended as internal illustrations for "The Outsider" by Albert Camus

How did you make this work:
I wanted to express the protagonist's complex emotions with my illustrations in order to add to the whole meaning and understanding of the text. To accomplish that I explored the relationship between the protagonist and the sun and water because of the way they affect and mirror his emotions. The illustrations were created digitally with the intention of having a traditional feeling.
