This work was inspired by Eileen Zhang’s book ‘Blockade’, which depicts a strange temporal and spatial illusion. This piece captures the nostalgia for the history of Shanghai.
Chenyue Yuan is a Chinese-born illustrator now based in London, studying Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art.
This piece was created as a university project to reimagine Rainbow Rowell’s book ‘Carry On’ which has been an inspiration for Emma’s practice as a queer artist. This illustration was made digitally with watercolour textures overlaid with vibrant colours and a magical feel.

This book cover was commissioned by Berlin-based published Maro Verlag. It uses a combination of analogue and digital collage to show the different generations who make up the narrative of the book.
