Trajan
cover illustration for "Shanghairen"

Interview:

Why did you choose to enter this work?
Thank my Illustration Agency, JSR and agent Raya for encouraging me and helping me finally choose to enter this work. Also, I rarely work on cultural projects, so this project is unique to me.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
My work is generally known for being featured commercially so I really enjoy being able to create pieces which integrate cultural background and personal opposition into my work.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
While working as an illustrator, and being part of the world illustration awards 2022, I have had the opportunity to see exquisite works of art and whimsical ideas of the many excellent illustrators

Where do you usually work?
I have a small studio near Stratford where I usually do illustration projects on my tablet and I do easel painting.

How long did it take to complete your project?
The founder of the Shanghairen Project did not give me a deadline for the project. While teaching myself the skill of animation, I made an animated version of the cover within a few weeks.

What is your dream commission?
I would like to make something wonderful, popular, and meaningful. I would like the commission to also tell a good story.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
The plants under the moon, the architecture reflected in water and the beauty of the night.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Experience and concentration are simple skills, but most of the time, they work better than inspiration.

What are your plans for the future?
I hope to develop and grow as an illustrator until my 50s and then, I want to enjoy my retirement in somewhere close to nature, collecting insect specimens.
