Interview:

Preferred Pronoun?
she / her

Why did you choose to enter this work?
Working in illustrated ceramics is a more recent and exploratory development in my practice, so I hoped to get some feedback on my new way of working.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I like that my Shucky Dog piece explores the idea of a story within a story. The surface illustration tells a story in itself, but the 3D element presents an additional character to the story.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
To have my work recognised by industry leaders and to be able to say that I have been shortlisted for WIA2024. Wow, I'm so chuffed!

Where do you usually work?
I'm lucky enough to have a room in my home as a studio space. In my studio I draw, print and build ceramics, and generally make a lot of mess. Fortunately I can close the door and hide the chaos!

How long did it take to complete your project?
Many, many days. Ceramics can be a slow process and I am still learning. As an exploratory piece there were many stages - from initial ideas, through to sculpting, illustrating and firing.

What is your dream commission?
To be commissioned to produce a series of illustrated ceramics that tell a story, for a client such as the V&A Museum, the Natural History Museum or the National Trust.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Experiment and have fun with your work. Create work you enjoy making not work that follows trends. Be inspired by other artists but respect copyright and avoid replicating others' work. Be you.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to develop my ceramics further, exploring other ways to combine ceramics with my printmaking and drawing practice. My ideal would be to develop a body of work for a solo or group exhibition.
