Lara Hawthorne
The Night Flower

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
The idea was developed in collaboration with Joanna McInerney and Olivia Cook from Big Picture Press. My brief was to develop a lyrical non-fiction picture book about the night-blooming flowers of the Saguaro cactus and the animals that rely on the cactus to live. The events of the story take place over 24 hours in the Sonoran desert, as animals gather for the first Saguaro bloom of the summer.

How was the illustration used:
In a published book

How did you make this work:
I researched the diverse and colourful wildlife that live around the Saguaro cactus as I developed the book. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum helped with fact checking. It was a satisfying challenge to illustrate my own writing, with the artwork and text developing alongside each other. The original gouache and watercolour A2 paintings were scanned, reduced and Photoshopped into separate layers
