The World Illustration Awards 2023 Longlist features 500 projects by New Talent and Professional illustrators from all over the world across ten categories. This year, the awards celebrate great illustration!

Mariko Jesse
Hong Kong Willow Pattern Ceramics
Professional
The artist was commissioned to create a modern interpretation of the tradition Willow Pattern, out of urban Hong Kong elements, to be used on a local ceramic product range. The design features birds, boats, trees and temples, and reflects the traditional and contemporary feeling of Hong Kong. The artist regularly adds new pieces to the collection.
Mariko Jesse was born in Japan, raised in Hong Kong and educated in the UK. She is currently based in San Francisco.
Tess Smith-Roberts
Comic Relief
Professional
The artist drew this for the Comic Relief Red Nose Day campaign, with TKmaxx. Along with 10 other artists, they helped raise money for people in the UK and around the world, including Ukraine. The t-shirts were sold in TKmaxx stores and online. “Being such an iconic charity, it was so amazing to see this project come to life! And so lovely to help raise money with my work.”
Tess Smith-Roberts is an Illustrator based in London. She approaches her work with humour, bold shapes, and a playful use of colour.
Michael Parkin
St Doro
Professional
The artist worked with Wide Open Studio to create a branding identity for St Doro Limoncello, which reflects the rustic home-grown nature of the business and celebrates their journey from humble beginnings. These illustrations were used for the logo and other branding collateral, including tote bags, business cards and t-shirts.
Michael Parkin is based in the U.K. His light-hearted take on conceptual illustration appeals to clients like The Science Museum and BBC for illustrations depicting real-life scenes.
Wendy Li
Take Me Somewhere
New Talent
This set of Risograph printed posters were created to promote classical music concerts. The illustrations were inspired by both the repertoire of the concert as they depict different places in different times, as well as the architecture of the concert hall. The choice of Risograph printing aims to convey the nuanced differences in each live performances.
Wendy Li is a multidisciplinary designer based in Hong Kong and London, and is a Graphic Communication Design teaching assistant.
Stav Assis

New Talent
The artist made this University project out of a big love for dogs and design. He wanted to experiment with the shape of the dog’s body, develop it into a logo, illustration and embedding it in one matchbox package brand.
Stav Assis is an Illustrator and graphic designer based in Tel Aviv.
Junxiao Liu
Autumn in Beijing
New Talent
The artist created this illustration to portray the comfortable life of people in Beijing during autumn, enjoying the beautiful scenery. People enjoy the autumn in Beijing by riding bicycles, admiring the ginkgo leaves, boating, and hiking.
Junxiao Liu is from China and studied at Beijing Institute of Fashion. She loves painting life, and hopes to show real emotion through illustrations.
