WIA2023 Longlist Category Highlights: Science & Technology
From campaigning to advocacy, to awareness raising, illustration in the Science & Technology Category performs many functions. Beautiful imagery combines with vital information and ideas to create meaningful and informative work that offers new ways of seeing the world.
The World Illustration Awards 2023 Longlist features 500 projects by New Talent and Professional illustrators from all over the world across ten categories. This year, the awards celebrate great illustration!

Owen Davey
Octagon Comparison Puzzles
Professional
These 300-piece children’s puzzles were commissioned by Mudpuppy. They illustrate the sense of scale between different creatures and help encourage a natural curiosity and sense of wonder. The octagonal design allows multiple people to work on the same puzzle together with elements the right way up, whichever direction you look at it.
Owen Davey is an Illustrator based in Worthing, UK. He has produced more than 20 picture books published in over 25 languages globally.

Swiftsolar
Professional
This commission for Swiftsolar advertises their development of more efficient, lightweight, and flexible solar photovoltaic (PV) cells and panels in the USA.
The artist created an isometric illustration and animation showing various solar-powered products, such as watches, electric vehicles, satellites, drones, houses and solar farms. The looping animation brings it to life.
Kürşat Ünsal is a graphic artist and illustrator based in Turkey. His style is characterised by simple colours, geometric shapes, and careful observation.
Yi Pei Lieu
On Target for the Precision Health Era
Professional
This illustration was commissioned for A*STAR Research, the flagship publication of the Agency for Science and Technology, Singapore (A*STAR). To showcase Singapore’s innovative National Precision Medicine program, the artist created a compelling visual that captured its three-fold goal: delivering the right treatment for the right patient at the right time.
Yi Pei Lieu is a graphic designer at Wildtype Media Group, the Singapore-based publisher behind award-winning titles like Asian Scientist Magazine and Supercomputing Asia.
Katherine Yang
The Price of Nature
New Talent
The artist made this work as a reflection of an intricate ecosystem. The barcode in the background represents people’s constant efforts to place values on nature. She placed circles on it to represent native species inside the system. The white circles represent various wildlife and the black ones represent species that have become extinct.
Katherine Yang is currently based in China. She self-studied illustration and animation over the past two years. She is also a wildlife activist who has used illustration to support local wildlife conservation efforts.
Ziying Zhang
The Stomach in Emotion
New Talent
For this University project, the artist wanted to make more people aware of how emotions can affect one’s health. This set of illustrations highlights the link between emotional and gastrointestinal problems.
Zhang Ziying is from China. She is currently an illustrator and will graduate with an MA in Illustration from Kingston University
Coby Wightman Smith
Brain picking
New Talent
This work is personal to the artist, about his own experiences with mental health and how he dealt with it. He aimed to create a visual message through using metaphors. Its primary purpose is to be in a public place where it can be easily observed and discussed.
Coby Wightman Smith comes from the Forest of Dean and studied Illustration at the University of Plymouth. He uses metaphor combined with bright, edgy colour palettes within his imagery to explore human psychology.
