AOI Mentorship 2022: Introducing Patrick Campbell-Brookes
The 2022 AOI Mentorship scheme is now fully underway! First introduced in 2020 and expanded in 2021, this free program is designed by the AOI to further support and guide under-represented illustrators in an intimate and supporting setting.
UK-based illustrator Patrick Campbell-Brookes is one of 17 new mentees selected for this year’s edition, paired with mentor and illustrator Matt Murphy. We learn how his mentorship is going so far and what he’s hoping to achieve in the months ahead.
What does being part of the AOI Mentorship mean to you?
It means a lot being able to have someone to talk through ideas and get personalised advice and help. It’s an incredible opportunity and I’m super grateful to have been selected for it!
What has the mentorship been like so far?
It’s been amazing! Matt’s been so great to talk to. He’s shared a lot of insight on art process and design as well as admin stuff, such as contracts and dealing with clients. We’re currently working on contacting clients and setting up a good first impression, and had a quick look at improving my use of painting and textures in my work, but will be focusing on that more soon!
What do you hope to accomplish by the end of the mentorship?
Hopefully to have some editorial work locked down or, if not, to be set up ready for some! Also, to have improved my style in terms of skill and colour theory.
We’d like to thank Patrick for his time in giving this interview. See more of his work on his website and Instagram.
