Sarah Lang-Rybicka
A magical journey

Interview:

Preferred Pronoun?
She/her

Why did you choose to enter this work?
The book cover is part of my very first picture book that I’ve written and illustrated myself. It is unpublished so far and I thought it would be a good illustration to share. :)

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I feel that it’s taking you on a journey, and it rises a lot of questions. It was so pleasant for me to create this artwork and I believe it shows.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
It’s the first time I’ve entered anything for an award or competition. I never believed that anything would come out of this and I am just so honored to be shortlisted next to such amazing talents.

Where do you usually work?
During the day I love to sit in my little office, where I can draw without disturbances. And in the evenings, I mostly draw next to my husband on the sofa while we watch our favorite series. :)

How long did it take to complete your project?
It's difficult to say as the cover was part of a double page spread illustration, which I adapted to a cover. But I believe from sketch to finish it was in total around 5 hours.

What is your dream commission?
My dream commission is to illustrate a children's book that celebrates nature, showcasing diverse plants, animals, and cultures, to inspire wonder and appreciation for the environment.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I love to draw the beauty of nature and the world around me. Whether it's plants and trees, animals or children, I enjoy capturing the wonders and diversity that make our world so special.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Don’t give up! Starting can be hard and you might not feel good enough, but you have to put this feeling aside and just draw what you love to draw. Keep on doing what you’re doing, you’re great!

What are your plans for the future?
I’d love to take illustrating to the next level and get representation to draw for other authors and to publish my own books - that’s the dream!
