A Piece of Red Cloth

Cover Illustration for The Beijingren

Interview:

Why did you choose to enter this work?
Besides I’m happy with the result, this illustration also represents where I’m from and what I’m rooting for, so I feel it's a strong piece, and I’d love to share it with the world.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
Though it was a commissioned project, I’ve been given the freedom to tell the visual story in my own way and from my own perspective, so it has a lot of my personal feelings in it.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I’m thrilled to be shortlisted as this is my first editorial illustration. It’s a big honour and a fantastic start for me to enter the editorial and publishing world.

Where do you usually work?
I’m currently freelancing, so I work from my home studio where I do oil paintings and pet my dog.

How long did it take to complete your project?
Since it was not an urgent project, it took me one week to nail down my theme, and another two weeks (on and off) to finish it.

What is your dream commission?
Cover illustration for “The New Yorker” I guess, actually I’d be happy to do any illustrations for book covers and album covers.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
People, different people have always been my biggest inspiration.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Draw for fun and try as many different mediums as possible, it’ll prevent you from getting bored and stuck :)

What are your plans for the future?
I’m currently working on my first children’s picture book, along with that I’m really looking forward to collaborate with other content creators, like writers and musicians.
