Interview:

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I felt it fulfilled what excited me about the work I see showcased by the WIA and was keen to be a part of something that has been an inspiration to me in the past.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
The overall design, from the typefaces I created to the portraits themselves, which tapped into the established iconography of the books while offering something new and innovative.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
The opportunity to have my illustrations validated on such a respected stage as well as to be have my work displayed alongside such an inspiring selection of creativity.

Where do you usually work?
The iPad as a tool for drawing has completely opened up my work set up, allowing me to work at my desk in a studio I share with my wife, but also just sat on the sofa on an evening. Creative bliss!

How long did it take to complete your project?
A week as I really got stuck into the overall design of the covers, creating a seamless layout that ran across all covers no matter which order they were laid out in.

What is your dream commission?
I'm a huge fan of all things spooky and I'd love to work on a series of horror books for kids or teens, such as Goosebumps, and bring all those ghouls to life for a whole generation of readers.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I'm assuming it's related to why I ended up studying fashion at University but I love nothing more than drawing snappily dressed ladies and gents sipping coffee and being hip.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Be true to yourself and what you love but always make sure you're absorbing as much of the world around you as possible. It's easy to get comfortable with what you do, so always want more.

What are your plans for the future?
Other than illustrating a series of spooktacular middle grade books, I'm going to continue to refine my work, create the best illustrations I can, chase those commissions and enjoy every last minute.
