What is a River?

Commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
In today's world, I think it is important to talk about the neighbourhood of people and nature. Hence I decided to make a book that would tell about many beautiful and harmful relations we have with our environment and I chose rivers as my subject because of many interesting geographical, cultural and mythological associations. I wanted to balance both factually accurate and poetic storytelling.

How was the illustration used:
On spreads of a picture book.

How did you make this work:
I composed the book as an imaginary expedition of a child and her grandma as to find out what a river is in different contexts. The story came out from a collection of references I gathered from various documentary sources as well as my own memories from growing up close to a river. To make my book I used pencils, watercolours, gouache, drawing firstly on paper, and then refining digitally.
