The Selected Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
As winner of the Book Illustration Competition 2018, hosted annually by The Folio Society and the House of Illustration, I was commissioned to illustrate the full edition of "The Selected Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes". To me the essence of Sherlock Holmes stories is searching for a impossible solution but finding it in the end, all wrapped in a cosy, almost playful atmosphere.

How was the illustration used:
one book cover and 9 inside illustrations

How did you make this work:
The trompe l’oeil style, creating optical illusions through illustration, adds menacing realism to the images. The bars jumbled like jackstraws across the cover represent the difficult cases/stories, but also the search for a needle in a haystack (= the solution to a case). The found needle (=solution) held by the hand is forming a magnifying glass, one of Sherlock Holmes' signature accessories.

Biography:
I’m a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, working primarily in the fields of editorial illustration and album artwork. However, I’m basically curious about everything that needs some smart and concept-driven or atmospheric imagery. Apart from that I’m a highly trained Kochkäse wallower and part-time grump trying to seize this weird thing called modern life in my personal work like DAYMARE BOOGIE or THE PSYCHIC VAULT.
