London Ladd
Negro Mother

Interview:

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I love this assignment and am extremely proud of the final art.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
For the viewer to understand the complex family dynamics through the perspective and intentional design of the view from above.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
To be recognized by such a prestigious organization and see my work alongside so many amazing creators worldwide!

Where do you usually work?
I work in the basement of my home. It allows me plenty of room to work without being bothered by other people.

How long did it take to complete your project?
It took about ten days from the sketch to the art director's feedback and the final art.

What is your dream commission?
I have a bunch, but the top of my list would be the cover of The New Yorker. I'm confident whatever they assign will be amazing and inspiring to illustrate.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
That's a tough question. I guess whatever pops into my head when I wake up. I like to start my day sketching or painting something for 30-60 minutes.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
To keep working, don't give up, surround yourself with good people you can trust, be kind to yourself, and respect others. It's so much about mindset and desire.

What are your plans for the future?
I want to keep pushing the limitations of my creativity and how I approach solving visual problems in new and exciting innovative ways that are genuine to my heart.
