Interview:

Preferred Pronoun?
he/him

Why did you choose to enter this work?
Professionals will probably recognize that there are somtimes briefs and ideas that very happily coincide. You instanly have an image that pops up you know will work. The execution is so much fun!

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
The concept is simple, a bit gruesome and powerful. It gets visceral reactions. I love it when context, concept and execution are one and the same.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
Everything about it excites me! It's a great honour.

Where do you usually work?
I work all over the place: at home, in café's; the library of the university where I teach. I don't have a studio (hope to have one), I'm always on the move and have to find small pockets of time.

How long did it take to complete your project?
This one was a long fantastic flow of, I think, about 8 hours from brief to idea to execution.

What is your dream commission?
Literally any subject is interesting, I love it when there's urgency, good writing; and in general the feeling that there's a story that needs to be told. I love writing and images wich are layered.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Going through old sketchbooks dating back to my childhood I have always drawn people, faces, lots of cities, buildings and landscapes. I also love food: vegetables are cool.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Such a hard question.. I would say: your most elegant, simple idea is probably your best. It took me forever (and still) to compress conceptual complexity in visual beauty and impact.

What are your plans for the future?
Keep making images, art, read and write. Teach and learn. I trust the best is yet to come ;)
