Giovanni Gastaldi
Micro/Macro

Interview:

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I chose to invest in this project because of a disappointment. I created this work for a call, in which, however, I was not selected. But I believed in this work too much, and it paid off!

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I am glad that a work that speaks about a problem in the Italian school has been understood and shared even by people from other countries and cultures. this is the magic of illustration!

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I hope to return to England for the award ceremony. I also went to the opening of the 2019 exhibition and it was a wonderful experience!

Where do you usually work?
I work in a small coworking space in the historic center of my town. it is a small town nestled in the hills of llagnhe and the mountains of piedmont, Italy. I work with Mac and IPad.

How long did it take to complete your project?
Not much. Once I had the idea, it must have taken me about three to four hours to finish the illustration.

What is your dream commission?
Of course, a cover of the New Yorker!

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
It depends a lot on what I'm looking for! these days for example I'm obsessed with shoes: I don't draw them as well as I'd like, so I'm filling pages with proofs!

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Always respond to emails on time, it sounds crazy but it is one of the best tips I could give about this profession

What are your plans for the future?
To keep working, to make myself known especially outside Italy. Yo find a good agent and work for the most important newspapers and magazines in the world!
