Charlie Padgett
Drowning in Denial

Interview:

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I really like how it turned out, I am proud of this piece. I got that good feeling in my gut when I finished it, I still get that feeling when I look at the illustration now.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I like that even though the story is complex and scientific, the art tells the story in a way that is engaging and slightly weird.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
Being shortlisted reminds me that I am part of something beyond my studio, that I am part of a worldwide community of talented artists.

Where do you usually work?
I have a small attic studio in my house . It can get a little hot in the summer and a little cold in the winter but I love it. There are good creative vibes there.

How long did it take to complete your project?
From concepting to final image, about a week.

What is your dream commission?
Every commission is a "dream commission". Seriously. But I would love to do album art for any of my favorite bands or book covers for Neil Gaiman.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I like to draw figures and faces, distorting them, making them more abstract than realistic.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Just keep going.

What are your plans for the future?
To just keep going.
