Chang Gao
Li Bai, The Moon Chaser

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
This set of illustrations was made for the novel "Li Bai, the Man Who Chased the Moon". Li Bai, born in the Tang Dynasty, is one of the greatest Chinese poets. The novel describes his upbringing, frustration in career and his pursuit of self , and incorporates the historical environment of that time. The first image is also inspired by one of his most famous poems, "Silent Night Thoughts".

How was the illustration used:
For the book " Li Bai, the Man Who Chased the Moon", 20 images in total.

How did you make this work:
In this group of works, I have used traditional Chinese painting techniques, but not on traditional rice paper. Li Bai's poems are ethereal and often use both imagery and abstraction, giving people a great deal of room for imagination. In terms of technique, I made a lot of use of white space, and in a few case I created "miniature landscapes", like a storm in a teacup.
