Cé Simonis
My Brass Band

Interview:

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I like the dynamism and joyful madness of this book. I think that the 3 riso colours mixed really well and I'm proud of the text and images. Also, I really like brass bands!

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
It's a joyful and surreal book that I wrote, illustrated, printed and put together. I could choose the best format for the story and make it all happen using my riso machine, which is exciting.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
It is such a brilliant platform for my work, and I'm really happy to be able to meet other illustrators and commissioners that way.

Where do you usually work?
I work from a wee house in the woods of the south of Belgium. I have a table to draw (it's always a mess), a computer and tablet (for digital tweaking etc), and I share a riso machine with my partner.

What is your dream commission?
A quirky kids' book, of course! (I write stories too). I would also love to work on musical projects (band posters, album covers, T shirts, etc), (Milk Records Australia, email me!)

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Anything related to nature, music and space. But I have fun drawing pretty much everything (I have done a lot of projects with scientific themes for example). I like movement and depth in my images.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Don't give up, don't forget to stretch your shoulders time and again, and don't forget to have fun!

What are your plans for the future?
Carrying on making my own books, going on residencies and to lots of fairs. I would also like to work on longer projects with publishers.
