Annette Saugestad Helland
How to Tame a Cousin

Interview:

Why did you choose to enter this work?
This is a project that I loved working on, where I used a lot of time to develop a unique visual universe for this story. I am proud of the result and wanted to share this :)

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I like that I have had time to develop a character-design and an overall visual style that felt interesting to work on, and that the visual narrative and style has its own voice in the book.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I feel very honored and excited that my illustrations was selected for the shortlist this year! I love the international aspect of this competition, the community and how it lifts up illustrators.

Where do you usually work?
I work in a studio close to my house, outside Oslo. It is in a re-built garage by a river. Its filled with a lot of analog drawing equipment but also digital devices, I love to mix these techniques.

How long did it take to complete your project?
The illustrations for this book took about a year to complete. I was allowed to spend time by my publisher (Gyldendal) and was very inspired by the collaboration with the author Janne-Camilla Lyster.

What is your dream commission?
I have had some dream-commissions, and feel extremely lucky. They include books, animations and digital installations. I would love to have more of these! (Also a VR-project would supercool)

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I like to try to make tactile, textured, atmospheric, dreamy, imaginative illustrations. I also love to develop unique characters with a strong personality that is made specially for a project.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
To try to keep the joy of creating and drawing, even when it feels hard to be an illustrator (which it can sometimes:)

What are your plans for the future?
I am working on a new book about Karin, and also on a longer graphic novel. I have also just completed an animated short film with co-director Johan Kaos and Mikrofilm called the Rumble - Bumble Rally
