Varoom 37 – the Love Issue
Love is a many splendored thing – and the new Varoom explores this emotive topic in a host of ways! From the bespoke Valentines created for commissioners by designer Marian Bantjes to the explicit but empathetic sex clubs drawings that Felix Scheinberger sketches in Berlin (below).
The Sensation of Reading (below) explores The Folio Society’s love of producing strikingly illustrated books, and we talk to the publisher, illustrators and designers who bring a new approach to classic texts. Exclusive interviews with many of the illustrators involved, including AOI members Andrew Archer, Shotopop and Chris Skinner can be found here.
The Innovators section focuses as usual on recent work in the commercial world, including David Roberts’ children’s book His Royal Tinyness (below) and Rob Bailey’s packaging for Smirnoff’s ‘Choose Love’ bottles, as well as personal projects including Samuel Wingate’s Grindr Project based on drawings from the app.
The lively B&W cover is by Olimpia Zagnoli, and other articles include the obsessions of Seth Bogart in Beauty School Gave Me Brain Damage, and Marian Bantjes’ exploration of the message of love with her bespoke Valentines to clients. Varoom 37 was edited by John O’Reilly.
