Small Fry x The Pound Project release Draw In and Draw Out

Small Fry, the first hosts of the Manchester AOI meet ups, publish two new books which extend on their workshops and events.

Written and curated by Small Fry duo of Maisy Summer (who has been longlisted for this year’s WIA) and Sarah Wilson, the books also include ‘Friends of Small Fry’ professional illustrators, designers and artists they’ve worked with before, answering how they put their ideas into practice exploring questions around; composition, sketchbooks, materials, texture, research, type and colour. The aim is to get the readers to take their pencil out for a walk.

The books aim to give you a creative boost; no matter if you’re a beginner or amid a creative career, by drawing on location, exploring new working methods, and getting outside to observe the world around them. Overall, a friendly piece of creative encouragement you can carry around in your pocket.

Draw In has a forward by the AOI’s Derek Brazell and identifies and unpicks creative hurdles that hold us back and is intertwined with insights from the FOSF to guide you through the artistic process and help shed some light on questions creatives of all abilities face. E.g. Where can I find interesting reference and research material?  How can I combine type with illustration? How can I create intriguing textures and informed colour palettes? How do you get started?

Draw Out | Is the sidekick of Draw in, an interactive workbook that puts theory into practice encouraging you to get out and draw. Centered around 3 field trips each comprising a range of drawing prompts, briefs, tips, and challenges to help feel ready to take on your next creative project.

After a successful pre-order campaign, the books were published on July 25th. A small quantity of copies are available to purchase from Small Fry’s shop here.
