Markings Illustration and Performance Festival: Symposium
Friday July 8, 2016 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM House of Illustration – 2 Granary Square, London, N1C 4BH
This new festival looks at the relationship between illustration and performance. Over two days, Markings presents a series of live art events, interactive workshops, performances and exhibitions, and an academic symposium comprising debates and talks, featuring internationally acclaimed practitioners and scholars.
A collaboration between University of the Arts London (UAL) and the House of Illustration, the festival invites illustrators to think beyond the at surface and consider how performance can be used to invigorate the form; and asks performers how illustration might offer added dimensions.
Symposium Details:
What happens when we watch a drawing developing before our eyes, and what does this tell us about how we think?
How can a magazine be performed?
Why is a book like a theatre?
When is research like making music?
What is “illustration and performance” anyway?
These questions and more will be discussed and debated by an international gathering of artists and scholars at the first MarKings symposium. The diverse and exciting programme includes presentations of new research, reflections on historical and contemporary theatrical performances, and musical accompaniments.
Each talk will be illustrated live by visual scribes. Audiences are invited to participate – bring your sketchbook!
