WIA2016 Shortlist
The Association of Illustrators (AOI), in partnership with Directory of Illustration released the complete shortlist of selected entries to the World Illustration Awards May 2016.
Works from professional and new talent within eight categories, including Advertising, Design, Children’s Books and Self Initiated among others. All 210 shortlisted entries are now showcased online and will permanently be available to view in the Awards archive.
The World Illustration Awards features work from a global range of artists and reflects the diversity in illustration within technique and medium, including animation, three-dimensional work, digital design, and traditional painting.
The diversity of illustration emulates that of people and the World Illustration Awards celebrates that tremendously.
Works include:
Paul Sanz Caballero’s (Spain) work “Loom n.2” uses a mixture of media, by merging pencil drawings mixed with different fabrics in Photoshop to provide the final images with a unique texture and finish.

Alternatively Fraser Shiers (Australia) from Forge & Marrow uses a completely digital approach to his illustrations “Medicine Grown From Science”. Using 3DS MAX, V-Ray, and Photoshop his work marries the natural form of plants with its scientific molecular structures.

Rob Gray (United Kingdom) credits his journals and sketchbooks as the main platform to create his children’s book “Beneath The Big Smoke”. His rough and sketchy style brilliantly captures the busy atmosphere of London.

Using mixed media and a thoughtful chaos of colour, Patrick Widmer (Germany) created a theatre poster for Lucerne School of Art and Design. His poster titles “Wirrwarr” translates to ‘confusion’ which is expressed using a mustached character.

Vibrant colours are also used effectively in Rick Berkelmans (Netherlands) illustrations provided for Native Shoes FW16 Kids Catalogue.

Deviating from explosive colour and digital processes, Jimin Kim’s (South Korea) artist book “Hyde & Seek” made up of black and white etchings is beautifully hand bound and portrays the concept of ‘alter egos’. This theme is executed through the imagery and intensified by the books interactive quality where the reader is able to create different compositions using the cut out sections.
