Drawing Diversity: Perceptions of Orientation in Illustration

From our Diversity and Equality roundtable talks we understood that some illustrators would value a space to explore how to increase the diversity depicted in their illustration practice. This session is the sixth of a short series to explore that.

Ricardo Bessa will share his experience of inspiring projects which explores both queer representation in illustration and how he has navigated his career and diversifying his work. Ricardo, in conversation with AOI board director Montana Forbes, will discuss what inspired each project and why it was important to him. He will delve into the process of interpreting briefs, managing client expectations, bridging storyboarding and illustration, and the significance of inclusive imagery in the young adult and wider publishing sectors.

The session will provide practical insights on research, figurative drawing and drawing from mythology as a route to creating and portraying diverse and queer characters. This platform will allow a space to respectfully discuss varying approaches to depicting diversity.

Please note: This online event will not be recorded.
