Making it with ADHD: Navigating the Illustration Career w/ Ana Jaks

22nd June 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Welcome to the AOI meet-up for disabled illustrators, in the widest possible definition. Book your ticket!

We will catch up with Ana Jaks! She’s a super successful freelance illustrator based in Bristol with a penchant for bright and bold colours, shapes and patterns. Easily adaptable, her work reflects inclusivity and diversity across a broad range of different projects from editorial to murals.

Ana is part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and neurodiverse – diagnosed with ADHD. She will walk us through what she does and how she does it and we’re here now to hear her story – the good, the bad, the exciting and the ugly about navigating a career as a freelance illustrator with ADHD.

View Ana’s portfolio here and check out her Instagram.

About ADHD

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in the world. It can be diagnosed in both children and adults. It affects our ability to focus, controlling impulsive behaviours and hyperactivity. It is said ADHD is far more common than Autism. It is important to voice and not stigmatise affected people. Fun fact – the typical symptoms of ADHD such as hyperfocus, resilience, creativity, conversational skills, spontaneity, and abundant energy can be viewed as benefits or “superpowers” because those with ADHD can hone them to their own advantage. People with ADHD always have a unique perspective of perception towards the world that brings an interesting and valuable point of view to everyone else.

About The Mixer

The Mixer is the disabled illustrators’ AOI meet-up. Our meet-up is open to all disabled illustrators, in the widest possible definition. This meet-up is about everyone involved to feel welcome to take part in building a community of trust. This is a place for disabled artists and illustrators to feel safe to speak up about any hardships and issues we have been challenged with and the solutions we came up with. We want to celebrate our proud moments, share our wins and most importantly – the love of making art.

The Mixer meet-up is a safe bubble to make new friends, get inspired and be supported. It is your space to blow some air, seek advice or simply share your art, tips and tricks to making it within the creative industry. All illustrators are welcome no matter where they stand in their professional career and whether they are an AOI member or not.

Please kindly note that the host – Alexandra Ramirez – is also a person with a disability. Her goal, in organising ‘The Mixer’, is to see the meet-up blossom into a positive community environment for everyone. She always appreciates feedback about the meet-up. And, please reach out anytime you need support, she’ll be glad to help you.
