Why did you make this work:
Like many people, I live in a city and long to get out in nature whenever I can. I wrote and illustrated the Tree at Number 43 to show that communities can have a positive impact on the environment around them and that you're never too small to make a difference.

How was the illustration used:
A 32 page picture book

How did you make this work:
This story is about a tree growing up through a house. To understand what the house might look like I built a series of models to draw from and kept a sketchbook of trees in my local area. I was also inspired by graphic novels to depict the growth of the tree in the story.

Biography:
Jess is an author/illustrator based in Melbourne. Constantly inspired by the natural world, Jess draws quite literally from a day-job at the Melbourne Museum. His debut picture book, Fly, was published in 2019 and was shortlisted for the CBCA and Queensland Literary Awards. His first two non-fiction books will be published in 2022.
