Patrik Svensson
Grieving at work

Interview:

Preferred Pronoun?
Him

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I think it's a good example of my ambition being a creative – trying to find a balance between style and idea, feeling and thought.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
The last few years has been more of a struggling path than before, and I know I'm not alone feeling this, so I'm excited that people still seem to appreciate illustration and graphic design.

Where do you usually work?
I have a room in a studio with a bunch of other freelancers within art, publishing, etc. Lucky enough to have a beautiful view over a canal with ships coming in when my eyes are tired of my iMac.

How long did it take to complete your project?
Hands-on work, my pieces usually take between 2 and 5 days. Concepting and research is a bit harder to say – anywhere between seconds and months.

What is your dream commission?
Like so many other within this industry, I'd say a New Yorker cover.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Depends on the theme, I try to keep my mind fresh and let the topic steer the idea. I keep coming back to nature a lot though, and often a human or some people in it in some way.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Don't be afraid of trying new things. I know many speak of finding your artistic voice, and that too is important, but I'd say it's equally crucial to not standing still.

What are your plans for the future?
I'll take a few weeks off now to be with my family, but after that: Keep nudging, keep trying to step out of my comfort zone.
