It’s not just paint, it’s personal

Interview:

Preferred Pronoun?
She/her

Why did you choose to enter this work?
It was really exciting to work on a project that put illustration so front and centre as it really represented such a leap of faith from both the client and design agency that commissioned me.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I love how this project comes to life in-store - it's a gigantic rainbow on shelf.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
It's exciting to come back as a shortlister as a full-time illustrator this year. Back in 2019, I won the SAA New Talent Award and it changed everything for me professionally.

Where do you usually work?
In the basement. Or outside whenever possible.

How long did it take to complete your project?
The project as a whole had loads of different components but the main illustration pieces took around 3 months to complete, from initial sketches to final artwork.

What is your dream commission?
So many... a packaging range for something delicious, a kids picture book, an illustrated textbook for schools, a cover for The New Yorker, a public mural....

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I love drawing animal characters - the hairier the better.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Draw, draw, draw as much as you can. Don't think, just draw.

What are your plans for the future?
Getting a tiny desk installed in our basement studio for my 2.5 year old and setting him to work!
