Melanie Gandyra
Hortus Domus

Interview:

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I entered this work for the WIA 2022 because for me this kind of commission shows how many possibilities there are for illustration besides the classy editorial one in magazines.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I really enjoyed the installation of the design in the store and how intense this kind of finalization of the artwork was for the whole body. Also I love how much freedom I had with my ideas.

Where do you usually work?
My work always starts on paper and I love to work in my studio as well as outside in the garden. I need all my pencils and books around me to start thinking and working.

How long did it take to complete your project?
The sketching part of the work was about one day and the final painting took me round about three full working days.

What is your dream commission?
It would be awesome to do more projects with Patagonia like illustrated books about different environmental topics. A very big dream is to once work together with Kew Gardens London.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I enjoy to draw everything out of nature the most and for me this is my biggest inspiration since ever.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Follow your inner compass and don't be anyone other than yourself.

What are your plans for the future?
I really want to find a fitting artist representation in the UK and US to spread my work much more all over the planet. I also want to start drawing & hiking workshops here in the Alps.
