Maus Baus
Dutch Welfare State

500 puzzle pieces of illustration about the Dutch welfare state.

Interview:

Why did you choose to enter this work?
Because I loved working on this illustration. I think I make the best work while I enjoy every aspect of it. The people I'm working with, the faith they have in me and some creative freedom.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
The birds! So I hope they feel home in my world of geometric shapes and bold colors. I also like that the large animals make the characters so small, and I guess all their problems look smaller too.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I've never made it this far. I think everybody needs to hear, from time to time, that their hard and passionate work gets recognized.

Where do you usually work?
I'm very happy with my studio and the creatives working there, but I also love to just sit at the kitchen table. It feels less serious, so i can relax more. Also walking to your workspace is key.

How long did it take to complete your project?
I think about a few days. I like to have one day for thinking, one day for pencil sketching, and one day to make the digital illustration.

What is your dream commission?
To be part of the things that I was a fan of when I was much younger. I would like to surprise that kid that didn't have ambitions at that time, but boy he wants everything now.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Animals! But I rarely have the change. I sometimes try to squeeze them in, just for fun. So to come back at the previous question: A dream commission would be for a company like WWF.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Try harder, never stop, and enjoy the ride. But don't get burned out along the way, so get enough sleep and eat well. It's so plain and simple, right?

What are your plans for the future?
I'm always bussy with the next assignment, surviving while doing my best. But it's not only me, so I would like to work together more. A bigger project for two perhaps.
