Mark Joshman
The Queue

A journey to Westminster; the citizens of Great Britain pay their final respects to Queen Elizabeth.

Interview:

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I chose to enter this work because it captured an event which was current and timely. Whether a Royalist or not, The Queue itself had made international news and touched millions of lives.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
That it shows a different perspective of the event; namely that the overwhelming mood of the day was not sombre but instead upbeat. People came together in a truly unique way.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
Being recognised along with my peers is an enormous honour. There are some extraordinarily talented people in this field and having the opportunity to engage and share ideas with them is exciting.

Where do you usually work?
My default ‘studio’ space is a desk area in the spare room of my house. My wife also has a work from home desk set up in the same room and our cat has a space of her own too.

How long did it take to complete your project?
This project took three months from inception to completion. The most challenging element was the final section where I had to decide on the finished layout of the newspaper.

What is your dream commission?
My dream commission would be to illustrate a graphic novel set in Old London. The architecture, colours, shadows and clothing of the time would be fantastic to draw.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
A combination of buildings and people. There are days where landscapes and architecture are my main focus and others when I concentrate on portraits.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
To keep working at your craft in order to find your own style. Don’t be disheartened if you try something new and it doesn’t work, that’s all part of the fun of learning.
