Why did you make this work:
My motivation to make this book is to (literally) draw attention to the richness of international childrenssongs and by doing so create tolerance for- and engagement with cultural diversity.

How was the illustration used:
The illustrations will be published in a childrensbook with international childrenssongs in september 2020 by publisher Querido with stories from award winning Belgium writer Jef Aerts and in collaboration with Aslan Muziek Centrum.

How did you make this work:
I did research on the history of childrenssongs and searched for a common ground to create unity in the book. I discovered that all the songs incorporate universal emotions and also -contradictions. I connected meaning of the song, emotions and culture and created visual stories for each song. I used only red, yellow and blue pigmented ink with the idea that we all consist of these three colours.

Biography:
Marieke is an auto-didact, Amsterdam based childrensbook illustrator. She has published several childrensbooks for different publishers. Marieke always tries to find the style that suits the story that she illustrates for. This results in renewing and experimenting for every new book and keeps her work challenging and her style fresh. Her main material is pigmented ink in the primary colours, with which she paints, drips, stamps, smears and draws.
