Humanity in Drawings

A silent book about humanity

Publishing

Un-commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
Humanity in Drawings is personal, experimental project, a silent book for adults. The charcoal drawings of the book examine the many layers of being a human; emotions and contradictions from birth to death. Pictures can be interpreted in various ways and they convey a strong emotional tone.

The book got "The Most Beautiful Book of the Year 2023" prize by The Finnish Book Art Committee.

What materials and techniques did you use?:
Charcoal drawing on paper.
I drew with charcoal on papers from size A4 to 80 x 100 cm. It was interesting to observe how the dynamics between the original drawings changed in the book format.
I drew spontaneously to preserve as much of the emotional expression of the process as possible, so that the reader of the book could relate to the images.

How were your illustrations used:
The illustrations where exhibited in a gallery when I published the book. The theme and visual language of the drawings continued in the concert for an accordion, paintbrush and black ink. I painted while a composer and musician Matti Kallio played his music.
