2024 | Longlist + Shortlist | Publishing

Why did you choose to enter this work?
Since my book is a self-publication, this was a brilliant way to promote it. Some of my colleagues suggested that I should take part in this competition - I am thankful to them.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
It was an experimental jump to the unknown. Unlike in my usual work, I first drew and only at the end chose and organised the illustrations, letting the images lead my story.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I feel encouraged to continue my path with my free way of drawing. Also, I find very exciting gaining more audience for my illustrations, I am interested in working internationally.

Where do you usually work?
I have two studios. At home I have a room for my digital work. The other is a studio in an artist house on a tiny island in front of my hometown Helsinki. There I draw and paint.

How long did it take to complete your project?
I made drawings during a couple of years, between other projects. I worked mostly in artist residencies. I find this way of working very inspiring, one can concentrate solely on the project.

What is your dream commission?
My dream commission would probably be editorial, experimental, with a good and important message to convey. I love to have new challenges.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Emotions. I most often find myself putting my soul into my drawings, processing my illustrations emotionally.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Believe in yourself. World needs illustrators to tell stories, spread culture, joy and understanding.

What are your plans for the future?
I experiment with different forms of illustrating. I paint more and draw a lot by hand, not forgetting the digital work flow either. My audience consists of children and increasingly adults.
