Laura Simonati
Piccoli Posti

Exploration

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
I started this project as a daily drawing task in June 2020 in order to experiment with style and imagery. “Piccoli Posti“ (Small Places) consists of a series of small drawings made in not more than 15 minutes, with markers. Each drawing represents an imaginary place, sometimes related to the Italian province. The entire series is visible on the dedicated Instagram page: @piccoliposti

How was the illustration used:
All illustrations in the series have been published on the Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/piccoliposti/ as a self-initiated project. Some of them were featured on it's Nice That and 5 of them were made in a collaboration with Libri Belli, curated by Livia Satriano.

How did you make this work:
I wanted to explore my imagery by experimenting with a style that was as immediate and 'poor' as possible, imposing a series of 'limits' on myself. Each illustration is 5.5x8cm in size and is drawn using a maximum of 2 cheap fine-pointed markers, occasionally using a ruler. The illustrations are drawn on recycled paper, salvaged from old notebooks and from my parents' and grandparents' houses.
