Jim Butler
Blackrock Sequence

Un-commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
To design, illustrate, print and bind a limited edition artist's book in collaboration with a poet. The 11 poems are a sequence which explores the cultural, historic and ecological richness of a stretch of suburban Dublin coastline. Each poem responds to a specific location. One of the themes which runs through the poems is the idea of the city as a palimpsest.

How was the illustration used:
Limited edition artist's book

How did you make this work:
I made a series collages on location and took rubbings from manhole coves and incidental plaques. I was looking for a common visual language which could draw out the layers of meaning, while still being specific to both the location and tone of each poem. Using scrennprinting, I was particularly interested in the colours formed by overlapping layers. Found typography completes each image.
