Microsurgery of a Rat

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
To create an illustration of a simulated surgical intervention on a rat, using the availabe information (model of a rat, hand studies/photos, veterinary anatomy books and instruments). The challenge was to produce a good illustration with help of all available facts, examples and reference material, which are not always ideal. Because of this working method no animals were harmed in this process.

How was the illustration used:
This work was made as part of my study programme Master Scientific Illustration in Maastricht, and presented at the AEIMS Congres in March 2017 and at the graduation show in june 2017.

How did you make this work:
I set two additional challenges for myself: 1. To effectively visualise the various textures (rubber gloves, metal instruments, fur & the abdominal anatomy). 2. To make an aesthetically pleasing image, even though the subject can be considered offensive or unpleasant, by using light colours and a soft, fine detailed drawing style. Techniques: pencil/carbon dust and digital colouring
