Aleksandra Czudżak
Mural in Orientarium

Interview:

Preferred Pronoun?
she/her

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I am REALLY proud of the outcome. Mural looks exactly as I intended. I think it is a very special project. I have captured beauty of those animals well. They feel so majestic. I adore the details.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
The fact I could paint a mural inside a ZOO (for the second time, I did the same thing in my hometown). I could learn a lot about animals from their keepers.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I feel excited to be featured and seen among so many talented people from around the world. Also I can discover more illustrators by myself. I can see their ways of work, and learn new things.

Where do you usually work?
I work at home. To focus - I need to be surrounded by my artifacts. When I work on murals, I take headphones. Working with music is essential.

How long did it take to complete your project?
It took me one week to prepare project digitally, and two weeks to paint it on the wall. The amount of detail is really big, so sometimes I was leaving ZOO at night. I saw some night-time animals.

What is your dream commission?
1. Murals all around the world. Showing local animals, culture or folktales. 2. Commissions for people that inspire me. 3. To be part of making a movie. Working on visuals.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Animals, magical creatures, hybrids, people, patterns, plants, nature, folktales, hair, fur, scales, feathers, witches and devils.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Observe! Have fun! Try new things!

What are your plans for the future?
I am publishing my first book with a LOT of dogs!
