“This was composed on my first day of moving to a new country: hectic, weird, stressful and awkwardly familiar.”
“Being recognised by a successful organisation such as the AOI is a great stepping-stone, giving me confidence for the future.”
BRIEF: To provide a snapshot of ordinary emotions and amplify them within the setting of an extraordinary situation.
MATERIALS: Watercolour, ink and ballpoint pen.
RESEARCH: American superhero comic books.
PROCESS: Outline by pen, followed by use of watercolours.
RESISTANCES: My creative process is naturally fractured. I worked on several parts of the drawing at a time before they were individually completed.
INSIGHT: Although this was a self-initiated piece, I generally prefer working in collaboration with others.
DISTRACTIONS: Exploring my new surroundings.
NUMBERS: Five figures in zero gravity.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Feedback received has suggested that I was influenced by cubism but that was not the case, at least not intentionally.
