Martyna Gradziel – Tiny House
New Talent
This playful illustration illustrates an article about the increasing number of young adults having to move back with their parents.
The use of scale perfectly symbolises the feeling of being trapped and outgrowing your surroundings.
Martyna Gradziel is an illustrator based in Poland.
The rich colours and textures are fantastic. And the person filling up the entire house captures the literal squeeze people feel when it comes to housing issues.
Cheng Zhibin – Anyone can be the next
New Talent
Exploring the dark side of anonymity of Internet, this illustration captures the malicious comments from trolls online.
Whilst these comments exist online this illustration reflects how they become overwhelming as they slip into offline life.
Cheng Zhibin is an illustrator based in China.
This is a powerful black and white illustration, with skilled line work, that instantly gives big feelings.
Dion MB – Visualization for New York Prison Guards Who Brutalize Prisoners
Professional
Demonstrating the incredibly difficult task of Illustrating data. Dion visualises the amount of correction officers misbehaving and even abusing prisoners in the system.
All 5,461 infractions are represented in the resulting landscape shown in the article.
The incredibly detailed artwork was achieved using ink wash before being finalised digitally in Procreate.
Dion MBD is an illustrator based in Indonesia.
Dion’s choice to depict collected data into illustrated examples, on such a grand scale, quickly relays the weight of the problem that this story is telling. You can’t help but take notice.
Adara Sánchez – Ghost Dog
Professional
Commissioned by Salvaje Magazine this illustration captures the grief of loosing a pet as a vital part of the family.
Adara Sánchez is an illustrator based in Spain.
Adara’s various contrasts sensitively and cleverly captures the loss felt over a beloved pet. Such as the use of softer, pastel lines over a deep, park purple. As well as illustrating a collar and a hand full of colour over the an outline of a dog.
Pola Maneli – Family Man
Professional
Commissioned by The New Yorker, to illustrate a cover for their Dr. Martin Luther King Jr issue. A beautiful display of family joy.
Pola Maneli is an illustrator based in South Africa.
You instantly feel the love Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has for his children, as well as their fondness of him. Pola’s illustration of family warmth first grabs your attention, but then you start to see the finer details, and your appreciation for this artwork increases even more.

Shortlisted for Professional Editorial Category for their project Pool Bus
Why did you choose to enter this work?
Pool Bus was a commissioned cover for Illustoria Magazine #22 Invention Issue. I had so much fun from brainstorming with the AD, Beth to making the piece, that I want to share the fun with everyone.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I love to do quiet images if that’s a thing. The type of art that has some peaceful melancholia in it.
