Varoom 36: Cool, Stylish and Funny!
Since the 1980s, the work of French illustrator, Jean-Philippe Delhomme has explored the worlds of fashion and culture with visual wit and elegance.
Characterised as a fashion illustrator, his work is a loose-limbed visual sociology of our times, a comedy of manners inspired by playing with the practices and formats of photography. His Unknown Hipster character (below) brings laugh out loud observations on the cool cultural class.
‘His skill is his ability to create a believable narrative, with character and place, built around exuberant colour. “When I was at art school,” says Delhomme, “I didn’t know how to deal with colour, I thought were there some rules which I didn’t know? I went to a David Hockney exhibition in Paris and it was some kind of liberation he was just putting in colour like this and it works. From that day I have been using colours.’ Varoom editor John O’Reilly profiles Delhomme in the new issue. More here
