Pictoplasma returns to Berlin with a stellar line up of artists, illustrators, filmmakers and de-signers looking to the future and reimagining the visual culture.
This year, the world’s lead-ing conference on contemporary character design and art dives deep into the genealogies of character creation, peeling back multiple layers of influences, trends and contexts. It flips the script on the myth of ‘the original’, often touted as an artist’s singular autograph and guided by an inherent genius or talent, and asks instead: to what extent are our cre-ations our own, and how do we even determine the dimensions of originality, or indeed, imagination?
Across 3 bustling days, international creators and producers from all visual genres – illustration, animation, game design, crafts, fine and graphic arts – meet for an exchange of strategies and stories to shape the future of figurative aesthetics: featured artist lectures explore the edges of contemporary creative practice; daily workshops, jam sessions and demos allow to get hands-on with new mediums; vibrant discussion spaces connect creators, characters, and commercial contributors; and cutting-edge animation screenings invite all to delve into next-level emerging worlds.

The conference features an extended programme of 30+ lectures and presentations, panels, animation screenings and workshops, and introduces a new wide range of networking opportunities. Invited speakers this year include illustrators Angela Kirkwood, Christ Haughton, Felicia Chiao, Julian Glander, Murugiah, Nadine Redlich and many more.
Furthermore, Pictoplasma invites all visual artists to craft a character-powered public service announcement, showing your original character, what it stands for, and encouraging the slogan “Character Matters”. All entries will be considered to be part of a new group exhibition in the Berlin Conference. Find more details here.
The full programme of the 21st Pictoplasma will take place at Silent Green, Gerichtstraße 35, 13347 Berlin. 1st – 4th May, daily from 10:00.

All conference talks and animation screenings are streamed live to Pictoplasma’s global audience.
Participation in the three-day Pictoplasma Conference requires prior online registration, with discounts available to students and groups.
