Brexit white paper promises “secure basis” for right holders
The government published its long-awaited Brexit white paper 12 July. The short section on IP, beginning on page 46, makes no specific reference to copyright but recognises how “Intellectual property rights play an essential part in encouraging the universal benefits of innovation and creativity” and gives the general undertaking from government that “future cooperation on IP would provide important protections for right holders, giving them a confident and secure basis from which to operate in and between the UK and the EU”.
The white paper proposes a free trade area for goods. However, for “services and digital” it looks to “regulatory flexibility”, meaning that “the UK and the EU will not have current levels of access to each other’s markets”.
