The ‘Bold’ selection has been curated by Strawberrie Donnelly, the Art Director for Picture Books & Illustrated Fiction at Bloomsbury Children’s Books, designing books, commissioning illustration, and developing storytelling talent for children’s books aged 0-6.
‘Bold’ does not just mean a style, although there are some unifying qualities each artist here shares; purity of colour, simplicity of execution, a sense of spareness.
For me, it also means a boldness of creative spirit ~ being brave enough to pare-down a scene or an emotion to its essence, and to be fearless and unapologetic in leaving out unnecessary scenic detail.
In children’s books, often less really is more, and each of these artists caught my eye in how deftly and cleverly they captured a moment, an action or a characters’ personality.
Congratulations to all those selected – yours is beautiful, BOLD and brilliant storytelling at its finest.
