Children’s book illustration specialists Orange Beak are back at House of Illustration for a one-day deep-dive into all aspects of working as a professional children’s book illustrator.

This specialist professional development day will cover everything from making contacts and understanding publishers to developing an effective portfolio and online presence.

You will cover:

  • Contract basics
  • Publishers and imprints
  • Who does what in a publishing house
  • Presenting your portfolio
  • Samples and mail-outs
  • What to avoid on social media
  • Rejection
  • Communicating with publishers
  • Visiting book fairs, competitions and festivals

Whether you’re a student or recent graduate, prepping for the all-important Bologna Book Fair or taking the next step in your picture book journey after getting the bug on one of our courses or masterclasses, this is the course for you.

About the tutors:

Orange Beak Studio was set up by Art Director Ness Wood and author-illustrators Pam Smy and Maisie Paradise Shearring to deliver high-quality tuition, workshops and courses to those who want to specialise in children’s book illustration. Plus, back by popular demand, agent Felicity Trew will join the Orange Beak trio.

Feedback from previous Orange Beak workshops at House of Illustration:

Helped me gain a rounded education of how to manage the different aspects of a career as an illustrator.

It has helped inform me of new ways to improve my illustration career.

I have learned so much about how to approach publishers and agents.
