Why did you choose to enter this work?
This project began as my undergraduate thesis, allowing me to create a collection of my own illustrations. It's a standout work that truly showcases my skills and holds great importance to me.
What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
Yesterday Once More is a series of digital illustrations based on my childhood memories. I'm really happy that I could capture the essence of my hometown in each picture.
What excites you most about being shortlisted?
It's my first time participating in this competition. Initially, I was already delighted to make it to the longlist, so being on the shortlist came as a wonderful surprise!
Where do you usually work?
As a graduate student in illustration at SVA, I have my own studio space to work. I mainly use Procreate on my iPad for drawing, which allows me to work both at home and at school.
How long did it take to complete your project?
This project took six months to finish. Two months for conceptualization and research, two months for coloring the draft, and another two months for refining and perfecting the series.
What is your dream commission?
My dream commission would be one that gives me the freedom to paint what I love and excel at!
What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I find great pleasure in creating tranquil and cosy artwork that captures the small details of life in a natural way. This style allows me to convey the beauty of fleeting moments.
What is your best tip for other illustrators?
As artists, we all have a deep desire to express meaningful things through our art. Always remember to create and communicate your innermost thoughts through your illustrations!
What are your plans for the future?
I'll be working on my ongoing illustration series and also exploring new avenues like animation and indie games. (You can check it out on my website: https://sheyachen.com/game)
